Julie Johnston is a retired teacher, teacher trainer, and adult educator. For 10 years, she served as a resource teacher for the Spring Leaves Family Learning program, a 21st-century experiment in home/school-based education on Pender Island, British Columbia. Through GreenHeart Education (www.greenhearted.org), she works with educators worldwide (Canada, USA, Malaysia, Philippines, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Cameroon so far) who want to green the heart of their classrooms, curricula, and school communities. Julie now lives in Victoria, BC, where she is a passionate climate change emergency activist on behalf of the Earth, the future, and the children of all species — a passion she shares with her husband, Dr. Peter Carter of the Climate Emergency Institute.
In this podcast we will explore 3 Questions:
- Your work with educators worldwide is about urgently transforming our educational system to safeguard the future for the children of all species. Why is this urgent?
- “Greening the heart of education.” What does that mean?
- What might educational transformation be that responds to the threats of climate chaos, war, and violence, and how can our daily language bring sustainable ideas and peace into our conversations?
