David G. Newman, K.C., is a retired lawyer and
respected community leader whose career has spanned labour relations, human rights, environmental and Indigenous law, civil litigation, and restorative justice.
Since 2022, he has dedicated himself fully to volunteer service, focusing on peacebuilding and advancing innovative models of negotiation, mediation, and dialogue that strengthen communities and foster understanding.
David brings extensive governance experience as a board member of the Association of Manitoba Former MLAs and previously served as President, Foundation Chair, and Capital Campaign Chair of the Manitoba Cardiac Institute (Reh-Fit). He chaired the Review of the Civil Justice System in Manitoba and served as the MLA for Riel, later becoming a Manitoba Cabinet Minister responsible for Northern and Indigenous Affairs, Energy and Mines, Manitoba Hydro, and the Community Economic Development Fund.
Deeply committed to reconciliation and healing, David co-chaired the Anglican Diocese of Rupert’s Land campaign that fulfilled residential school settlement obligations and created a Healing and Reconciliation Fund. His leadership has extended across the North: he is a past Commissioner of the Nunavut Planning
Commission and has long worked to build meaningful
relationships with Indigenous governments and
communities.
A lifelong Rotarian and Past President of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, David co-founded Rotary District 5550 World Peace Partners and Peace Days, championing initiatives that promote intercultural understanding and non-violent conflict resolution.
David’s peace advocacy reaches global issues as well. He supports nuclear disarmament, co-founded Youth Nuclear Peace Summits, and helped create the Rule of Law on Earth Project, advancing global justice, preventing mass atrocities, promoting peaceful conflict resolution, and addressing existential threats including nuclear weapons, climate change, and abuses of power.
