PEACE PODCAST · Kathi King Champions Santa Barbara Earth Day. as the bithplace of Earth Day
The Oil Spill in Santa Barbara, California on January 28, 1969 had significant impact on marine life and the public outrage received media coverage around the world. This spill resulted in numerous pieces of environmental legislation and  led the way to the founding of the Community Environmental Council (CEC). Community Environmental Council.

Kathi joined CEC in 2008 and is currently the Director of Outreach and Education, overseeing outreach and education activities. She also manages the CEC’s waste reduction program, including the successful Rethink the Drink bottled water reduction program in local schools and public spaces. In 2021, she began teaching CEC’s Climate Stewards course through a partnership with the University of California, a certification program that works to build a committed corps of local climate activists. Kathi is co-director of CEC’s Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival.

The Santa Barbara Earth Day festival is one of the longest running Earth Day Celebration in the country
orchestrated annually by Kathi King and Community Environmental Council. The 55th Earth Day will be
celebrated April 26-27th, 2025 at the beautiful Alameda Park, with music, a plant forward food court, vendors
and the largest green car show on the west coast. SB Earth Day
